Description

The Academy is located on a newly developed section of the Carolina Forest neighborhood just off International Drive. The school building opened in December 2007 following the closure of the old academy located off Highway 17. The Academy is a school only for students in their Junior or Senior year of high school. Students take classes in their Junior year to prepare them for a research project in their Senior year, which culminates their studies.

History

The Academy began as a technical/vocational school, preparing students for careers following high school. As of 2006, it has since become a higher academics school, although it recognizes that some of its students will pursue careers following their attendance at the school.

CONNECT

CONNECT is a three-year diploma granting program of Horry County Schools for overage students who have experienced academic difficulties. CONNECT allows students to graduate at, approximately, the same time as their base school. CONNECT is housed at The Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, and provides instruction in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies which meets the standards for graduation. In addition, a careers program provides experience with job application, resume, and interview. Job shadowing, beginning in the first year, allow students on-site experience with professionals in fields of interest. Post-graduate study is possible at Horry-Georgetown Technical College and certificate-granting institutions. A four-year college can be explored only after successful completion of Horry-Georgetown Technical College or similar institutions. A CONNECT student is one who has experienced academic difficulties, failure of a school year, etc. The population of CONNECT students should not have a Lexile level lower than 600. They should have a good attendance record, a good behavior record, and difficulty keeping up with Honors/College-Preparation courses. They are, also, students who are probably likely to drop out of school, or are at risk of dropping out of school. CONNECT is not a haven for people who want a high school diploma, but are unwilling to earn it. CONNECT is not an alternative to the Alternative School for Base Schools. CONNECT is not for a special needs student who has spent their school careers in a contained classroom. To be a part of CONNECT, go to middle schools, present and answer questions that are given to you, and set up tours from middle schools to The Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology.
